In an effort to promote their environmental commitment, big box mega-retailer Wal-Mart has announced their efforts in working with the Global Plastic Shopping Bag Commitment program. Along with the Clinton Global Initiative and The Environmental Defense Fund (EDF), the global giant stands to make a serious dent in the plastic shopping bag waste.

This commitment could eliminate 9 million plastic shopping bags per year from Wal-Mart stores. The EDF will help Wal-Mart develop strategies for recycling, reusing and reducing the use of plastic bags in its stores by an average of one-third per store (from 2008 levels) by 2013. An estimated 290,000 tonnes of carbon emissions and energy consumption equal to 678,000 barrels of oil will be eliminated through this action.

For more information on how you can do your part to save paper/plastic and use more eco-friendly/reusable bags go to www.reusablebags.com.

The Brita Climate Ride 2008 is the first multi-day bicycle tour where individuals pedal to raise money and awareness of climate change and hope for a future powered by renewable energy and a green economy. Printing Responsibly recognizes these efforts and has thus donated to the event along with Green Drinks NYC (and many others) which began on September 20th. This event maintains that change is possible and that America can take the lead in a green economy.

The 120 Climate Riders will pedal 300 miles from New York City to the nation’s Capitol in Washington D.C. in five days, departing from the heart of Manhattan and then meandering along country roads through New Jersey, Pennsylvania, and Maryland. On the fifth day, riders will cycle past the iconic Washington Monument to arrive near the marble steps of the Capitol building. Here we will celebrate the riders’ amazing accomplishment and valuable contribution to the advancement of climate change education and renewable energy policies.

Along the way, expert speakers will educate and inspire Climate Riders about the science, the policies and the solutions to the climate crisis. Our riders and the communities we pass through will learn that our government, businesses, and each individual American will benefit from a cleaner, healthier climate. This is a unique event—a fundraiser and climate conference on wheels.

Improper disposal of cell phones is a serious threat to our environment. Every cell phone contains no less that 8 hazardous materials including Arsenic, Antimony, Beryllium, Cadmium, Copper, Lead, Nickel and Zinc. Disposing of these phones in a landfill allows these substances to leach into groundwater and soil. Burning them in an incinerator releases chemicals associated with reproductive complications, cancers, and developmental problems especially in children. In 2006 alone, more than 130 million cell phones will be discarded. One cell phone can pollute up to 132,000 liters of water.

Other devices like computers, tvs, and radios (or any other device with boards and circuitry in them) are all that more harmful to the environment around us. Proper steps are needed now to help for a better life for future generations. Many local/county municipalities, electronics stores, cell phone suppliers, post offices, and even some supermarkets have drop-off boxes to recycle your cell phone or used ink cartridges. We at Printing Responsibly also offer this service at no cost to you. Bring in your old cell phone and/or expired ink cartridges and we’ll recycle it. We’ll even come pick it up if we’re in the neighborhood or dropping off your finished job. Just give us a call and we’ll take care of it for you.

For more information about recycling your larger electronics (like computers & monitors, batteries, audio/video equipment, MP3 players, etc.) contact your local/county offices. No-cost recycling days often exist a few times a month and will help save the environment from harmful hazordous materials.

Output resolution, i.e., PPI, DPI and LPI is commonly misunderstood. Here is a short, non-technical, non-scientific, simple explanation. (I am sure someone will leave comments about what else could have been said, but this is designed to get people started - if you want more information, it’s readily available with basic online searching skills.)

Terms like PPI, DPI and LPI are used to determine the difference in how resolution is measured depending on device. Many times you will incorrectly hear them used interchangeably. The Byzantine jumble of acronyms and jargon that is used to describe resolution is crazy. But never fear. Just memorize this concept, and you will understand more about it than most so-called experts.

When measuring DESKTOP PRINTER OUTPUT RESOLUTION, use dots per inch. DPI refers to the resolution of an output device like a laser printer or image setter. For example, a standard office laser printer is 300 dpi. A standard image setter is 2,540 dpi.

When measuring PROFESSIONAL OUTPUT RESOLUTION, lines per inch LPI is the resolution (line screen) of a professional printing press, which determines how much detail the press (and the paper) can hold.

When measuring MONITOR/SCANNER OUTPUT RESOLUTION, use pixels per inch. PPI is the resolution (or detail) of an image in a scanning or graphics program, and the resolution of computer monitors. For instance you might want to make it a practice to generate 72 PPI photos for the Web.
